Featured Conference Workshop: Python & Emerging GIS Tech. Plus Track #1: AI at the Annual
We're highlighting Workshops and Tracks for the upcoming Annual Conference to prepare you to See Things in a New Way . The full preliminary agenda is available here and Sched, our online scheduling system, will be up soon with the final agenda.
One way to start your Workshop Wednesday is with Jess Hoffelder and Samantha Olivieri. Let them lead you through Python, Population, and Optimization: Automating Data Processing with Python and ArcGIS Pro Notebooks. In this class, you'll explore how you can take your workflows- from daily tasks to annual projects- and use python to automate your analysis and processing. Utilizing ArcGIS Pro’s Notebooks (built upon the popular Jupyter Notebook framework), you'll see how organizations tackle large geospatial datasets with (relatively) small lines of code. This dual-agency workshop aims to demonstrate technical collaboration for the benefit of all.
Requirements: ArcGIS Pro 2.9 or higher installed on participant machine. All skill levels welcome!
Jess Hoffelder is a Spatial Data Analyst for the Data & Analytics Team within County Health Rankings & Roadmaps. She leads the team’s GIS work, including spatial analyses and the creation of static and interactive maps for the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps website. Jess holds a B.S. in Integrative Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and a M.P.H. in Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her interests include environmental health and environmental justice and using GIS and interactive maps to communicate data.
Sam Olivieri is a Federal Program GIS and Broadband Data Analyst with the State of Wisconsin Public Service Commission- Broadband Office. Her duties consist of analyzing and maintaining geospatial datasets as they relate to broadband accessibility, equity, and deployment. She, along with her team of five, help support the broader efforts of the PSC by leveraging geospatial technologies to support the efforts behind administering Broadband grant funding throughout Wisconsin. Sam brings her experience to the State from working in multiple levels of government in both Colorado and Wisconsin. Additionally, she has recently been voted in as the Chair of the Wisconsin State Agency Geospatial Information Committee (SAGIC). In her free time, Sam enjoys woodworking, disagreeing with Google Maps, and using GIS in volunteering for humanitarian relief missions.
Another Wednesday morning Workshop option is to sit down with Tyler DeBruin and David Buehler to collaborate on Emerging GIS Technologies.
During this workshop, you will learn a variety of different emerging technologies in the GIS profession. Whether it is an ESRI specific program update or integrating external systems, technology can be your best friend or your worst nightmare if you’re not prepared. The first hour will focus primarily on ESRI’s Experience Builder, with tips and tricks and how to best make the move from WebApp Builder to Experience Builder. The second hour will dive into the emergence of AI in GIS. We will go through a variety of different AI based technology from Survey123 Smart Assistants, deep learning technology, and a variety of other AI capabilities within GIS. The third hour will cover project specific examples of how emerging GIS technology can help in your everyday work.
You should have at minimum an intermediate experience level in GIS to attend this workshop. It is also required to bring a laptop with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Survey123, and Quick Capture ready to use. It is also strongly recommended to bring a mobile device with Field Maps & Survey123 downloaded onto the device (tablet or phone).
After a full day of Workshops, you can continue with the AI learning at the AI Track.
Join Waukesha County's finest (well, 2 of them) as Emily Sudar and Chris Dickerson show how Generative AI is becoming an invaluable tool for GIS professionals, streamlining everyday tasks such as project planning, workflow automation, and documentation. Examine the strengths and limitations of AI models like ChatGPT, Gemini, and GovAI, while sharing best practices for crafting effective prompts.
Stay on Track #1 AI with Andy Hess, from Calumet County, as he reviews Data Automation using ChatGPT. Andy will demonstrate how ChatGPT has become an indispensable took for Calumet County's GIS workflows, specifically in automating data processes and streamlining Python scripting. Andy will share practical examples of AI has helped bridge the gap between innovation and productivity.
